How to: Install an external CD-ROM drive with SCSI interface.
Solution:
If the SCSI adapter card with the EXTERNAL 50 pin connector is not installed, observe ESD considerations, and install the SCSI interface card, set the 'SCSI id' number and connect the EXTERNAL CD-ROM drive according to instructions in the user manual.
WARNING: Electrical shock hazard! Make sure the power is turned off and the external power cables have been disconnected before removing the computer cover.
CAUTION 1: This task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
CAUTION 2: Please observe steps to reduce the potential damage to computer components from electrostatic discharge.
1) Install the SCSI interface card:
NOTE 1: Read the instruction manual that came with the CD-ROM drive to determine whether the interface card bus type (ISA, EISA, VLB or PCI local bus) is compatible with the host computer.
NOTE 2: Read the instruction manual that came with the CD-ROM drive to determine whether the interface card is Windows 95-compatible plug-and-play, or a legacy model, which is jumper selectable.
a) Remove the computer cover.
b) Find a open slot of the same adapter bus type on the system board.
c) Remove the external slot cover for the corresponding open slot by removing a screw at the top of the slot cover.
d) Perform one of the following, depending on whether the adapter type is plug-and-play or jumper selectable:
1] For plug-and-play adapter cards:
a] Carefully insert the adapter card into the open slot.
b] Secure the adapter card using the screw removed in step 1)c).
2] For jumper-selectable adapter cards:
a] Select the interrupt, address, and DMA configuration using the jumpers (or switches) provided and according to the instructions in the CD-ROM drive users manual.
b] Carefully insert the adapter card into the open slot.
c] Secure the adapter card using the screw removed in step 1)c).
e) Review steps 1)a) through 1)d)2]c] to verify they have all been followed correctly.
f) Replace the computer cover.
g) Restart the computer and check for an installation error.
NOTE: Typical installation errors are wrong jumper selections, loose connections or bad components. If the computer does not start normally, refer the problem to next-level support or a qualified computer technician.
2) Install the external CD-ROM unit:
NOTE: Verify that the external SCSI connector, cable, and SCSI device connector are compatible. There are three SCSI standards: SCSI-1, SCSI-2 and SCSI-3. The three SCSI standards are compatible with each other (consult the CD-ROM drive user's manual for performance data and exceptions) but the data interconnect cable connectors on the CD-ROM device and adapter card may NOT be compatible. There are three types of connectors: 50-pin Centronics, 25-pin DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm), 50-pin high-density mini-DIN, and 68-pin high-density mini-DIN connectors. Adapter cable may be available to connect device and adapter with different connectors. Consult the manufacturer for availability and compatibility.
a) Connect the external SCSI CD-ROM device to the external SCSI adapter connector using the appropriate interconnecting cable.
NOTE 1: The interconnect cable should be no longer than 6 feet for trouble free performance.
NOTE 2: If the interconnecting cable has DIN (Dual In-Line Pin) connectors at each end, the ribbon cable will be keyed by a color to designate pin 1 of the ribbon cable. Make sure that the connector on the interconnecting cable is oriented so that the keyed side of the connector is compatible with the pin 1 connector of the CD-ROM device. This same keyed orientation applies to the connectors on the adapter card end of the ribbon cable.
b) Select the correct 'SCSI ID' according to the instructions in the users manual.
c) If necessary, place the terminating resistor pack or position the terminating switch according to the instructions in the CD-ROM device users manual.
NOTE: Terminating resistor packs may be active, passive or differential types, depending on the application and the CD-ROM device. Refer to the users manual for the appropriate type of resistor pack for the device.
d) Mark the AC adapter provided with the external CD-ROM as 'CD-ROM adapter' if not already done.
NOTE: The computer may have several devices that require AC adapters. Each device requires a certain minimal DC volt and amp value, so that the adapters are properly connected to the device they serve. It is recommended that they be identified with that device.
e) Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN connector (or equivalent) on the CD-ROM.
f) Connect the AUDIO OUT socket on the external CD-ROM with the AUDIO IN socket on the sound card (back of the computer) with the audio cable provided, if that feature is available.
g) Plug the AC adapter into the AC line:
NOTE: If the external CD-ROM device does not have its own ON/OFF switch, plug the AC adapter into the same switchable outlet as the computer so that the CD-ROM is turned on and off whenever the computer is turned on and off.
3) Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the CD-ROM driver.
